Amazon Seller Virtual Assistant vs AI: Who Does What in 2026

Should you hire an Amazon seller virtual assistant or use AI? Which tasks to give a VA, Seller Assistant or an AI agent, what each costs, and the guardrails.

Hiring an Amazon seller virtual assistant used to be the obvious next step once Seller Central ate your week. In 2026 there is a second option: an AI assistant that works around the clock, and a first-party one from Amazon that costs nothing. The honest answer is that most sellers need both, split the right way.

This guide shows which Amazon tasks to give to a VA, which to give to Amazon's Seller Assistant, which to give to an AI agent connected to your data, and what each costs.

What an Amazon seller virtual assistant does

A virtual assistant, or VA, is a remote person who handles the repeatable work of running an Amazon account. The job descriptions and SOPs agencies publish cluster around the same tasks:

  • product and competitor research
  • listing creation, optimisation and backend keywords
  • A+ Content uploads
  • PPC campaign management
  • inventory checks and FBA shipment creation
  • customer service and buyer messages
  • account health checks and suppressed listings
  • reimbursement claims
  • competitor price monitoring
  • reporting

A good VA brings judgment, memory of your business and the ability to deal with people: suppliers, freight forwarders, Amazon support. A VA also needs training, supervision and access to your account, and works the hours you pay for.

What an AI can now do on the same list

Amazon Seller Assistant (free)

Amazon's own assistant inside Seller Central now covers a good part of the VA checklist for a single account:

  • Account health and suppressed listings. It investigates inactive or blocked listings, stranded inventory, storage fees and compliance violations, and explains the fix.
  • Listing edits. With permission it updates titles, descriptions and bullets.
  • Support cases. It creates and submits cases and hands over to a human associate when it cannot solve the problem.
  • Monitoring on a schedule. Workflows run 24/7, including an Account Health Monitor, an Order & Returns Digest, a Pricing Analyzer and a Review & Feedback Requestor. See our Seller Assistant Workflows guide.
  • FBA inbound. Through the Selling Partner plugin in Claude, it can plan an inbound shipment step by step, with your approval. US only for now.

An AI agent on a data layer

An AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT connected to a data layer like DataDoe covers the analytical half of the list, including across accounts and marketplaces:

  • Reporting. The Monday report a VA builds from CSV exports becomes a question, or a scheduled brief.
  • PPC analysis against real profit. Ad spend joined to orders, fees, returns and COGS, so wasted spend shows up in money, not just ACOS.
  • Reimbursement finding. Lost and damaged inventory and fee errors, surfaced from your reconciled data.
  • Inventory and restock planning. Days of cover and reorder lists across every SKU and marketplace.
  • Vendor Central. Purchase orders, chargebacks and shortages, which Amazon's seller AI does not cover.
  • Actions. With Actions switched on, it can change listings, orders, shipments and Amazon Ads, with a dry-run mode to test first.

The task split: VA, Seller Assistant or AI agent

  • "Why is this listing suppressed?" Seller Assistant.
  • "Open a case about this reimbursement." Seller Assistant.
  • "Alert me when account health drops." Seller Assistant Workflows.
  • "Build the weekly P&L." AI agent on a data layer.
  • "Which campaigns lose money after fees?" AI agent on a data layer.
  • "Reorder list for the next 30 days across all marketplaces." AI agent on a data layer.
  • "One report across all our client accounts." AI agent on a data layer.
  • "Negotiate with the supplier about a late shipment." VA.
  • "Brief the photographer and check the new images." VA.
  • "Reply to an angry buyer in our brand voice." VA, possibly with an AI draft.
  • "Decide whether to discontinue this SKU." You, with the AI's numbers and the VA's context.

The pattern: AI takes the tasks that are data plus rules, and the VA keeps the tasks that are people plus judgment. The VA's job moves from producing reports to checking and acting on what the AI finds.

What it costs

  • A virtual assistant: rates vary widely by country, skills and hours. As one example, the agency 20four7VA publishes a starting price of $77 a week for 10 hours of an entry-level VA doing admin and data entry, about $330 a month. Experienced Amazon specialists, PPC managers and full-time hires cost several times that.
  • Amazon Seller Assistant: free. The Selling Partner plugin is free too, and Amazon Quick Plus is free for 12 months for sign-ups before 31 December 2026.
  • DataDoe: $97 a month with a 14-day free trial, for Seller Central, Vendor Central and Amazon Ads data in Claude, ChatGPT and other AI assistants.

For many sellers the cheapest setup that works is not "VA or AI" but a part-time VA supervising the free Amazon tools and one data layer, instead of a full-time VA building reports by hand.

Access and guardrails

Whether the helper is a person or an AI, it should only have the access it needs.

  • For a VA: add them as a Seller Central user with specific permissions. Never share the account owner's login, and never give admin rights you would not give an employee.
  • For Seller Assistant: access is the Seller Assistant user permission. Edit lets that user make account-level and ASIN-level changes through the assistant, so grant it deliberately.
  • For an AI agent on DataDoe: Actions are off by default, can be tested in dry-run mode, and every change is logged.

When to hire a VA, and when an AI is enough

  • AI is probably enough if you run one or two accounts, your time goes on reporting and account checks, and you are comfortable asking questions in plain English.
  • Hire a VA when the work involves people, suppliers, creative assets or customer service volume, or when you want someone accountable for acting on what the AI finds.
  • Use both if you are an agency or a growing brand. Give the VA an AI that already has the data, and they will cover more accounts, faster.

FAQ

Can AI replace an Amazon virtual assistant?

For reporting, account health checks, listing fixes and monitoring, largely yes. For supplier communication, creative work, customer service in your brand voice and judgment calls, no. Most sellers get the best result from a VA who works with AI tools.

Is Amazon Seller Assistant a virtual assistant?

It is an AI assistant, not a person. Amazon's Seller Assistant, formerly Project Amelia, answers questions about your account, fixes common problems with permission, files support cases and runs scheduled Workflows. It is free.

How much does an Amazon seller virtual assistant cost?

It depends on country, experience and hours. Agency rates for entry-level admin VAs start in the tens of dollars a week for part-time hours, and specialist Amazon VAs cost more. Compare that with Seller Assistant, which is free, and DataDoe at $97 a month.

What tasks should I give an Amazon VA?

Tasks that need people and judgment: supplier and freight communication, customer service, briefing designers and photographers, checking AI-made changes before they go live, and acting on the issues your AI reports surface.

Can an AI assistant manage several Amazon accounts?

Amazon's Seller Assistant works on one Seller Central account. DataDoe is built for agencies and brands with several accounts and marketplaces, including Vendor Central. See DataDoe for agencies.

DataDoe is not affiliated with or endorsed by Amazon or any agency named here. Amazon details come from Amazon's help pages and its 23 September 2026 announcement. VA pricing is an example from one agency's published rates; check current prices before hiring.
